A look back: Employee of the Year Luncheons #11 and #12

04/21/2016

In celebration of the DFW Hospital Council (DFWHC) Foundation’s 20th Annual Employee of the Year Luncheon on April 27 at the Irving Convention Center, we are counting down with detail on previous events. For prior articles, see below.

The 11th Annual Employee of the Year Luncheon, themed “Saluting Excellence,” was held May 17, 2007 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas. Erik Wahl, the inspirational speaker and artist displayed his painting skills by creating works of art on stage, which he later gave to the recipients.

Award recipients were Leslie Stephens, respiratory therapist at Baylor Regional Medical Center of Waxahachie; Nancy Lawrence, nuclear medicine assistant at Arlington Memorial Hospital; and Jakki Opollo, registered nurse at HCA’s Medical City Dallas Hospital. Tammie Robinson, a nursing student at Trinity Valley Community College, received the Rex McRae Scholarship. An additional highlight included the creation of AMN Healthcare’s Ardis Martin Scholarship named in honor of the 96 year-old nurse who still worked in healthcare in Amarillo. She was present for the event and memorably spoke at the luncheon.

The 12th Annual Luncheon was held May 22, 2008 at the Dallas Marriott Las Colinas in Irving. Jim Champy, board member at Perot Systems and author of “Reengineering the Corporation: A Manifesto for Business Revolution,” served as guest speaker.

The 12th luncheon also marked the year when the event’s format changed. Previously, award recipients were announced in advance. This year, all nominees were asked to attend and winners were announced at the luncheon in the fashion of an awards show. The luncheon was themed “And the Winner is…”

Award recipients were Terry Pothier, registered nurse at Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake; Sue Adams, human resources representative at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital; and Sharon Cox, a registered dietician at Parkland Health & Hospital System. Tiffany Brown, a student at Brookhaven College, received the Rex McRae Scholarship.

On Wednesday, April 27, the Employee of the Year Luncheon will honor more than 140 nominees and present 14 separate awards. The luncheon has evolved into a celebration for one of the most valuable resources in North Texas – great hospital employees. You can register for the event here.
