The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the financial viability of many independent physician practices across the country. Today’s practices are in survival mode and many are seeking a lifeline. One survey shows that 45% of primary care physicians reported staff furloughs or layoffs, and that 28% have deferred or skipped salaries. Even fiercely independent practices may now be weighing their options for a closer relationship with a hospital, health system or a transition into a private equity-backed group. Unfortunately for some, the group may already be breaking up due to the financial stress caused by the pandemic.
