IRVING, TX – The DFW Hospital Council (DFWHC) announced today that Barclay Berdan, FACHE will be the recipient of its Boone Powell, Sr. Award of Excellence. Presented on a periodic basis, the award represents the DFWHC Board of Trustees’ recognition of a peer in healthcare administration. It will be presented during DFWHC’s 78th Annual Awards Luncheon on October 16 at the Loews Arlington Hotel and Convention Center.
Berdan has served Texas Health Resources for four decades, serving as the system’s CEO since 2014. As announced earlier this year, he will step down in September as one of the longest-serving CEOs of a major health system in North Texas and a nationally recognized and respected professional in the industry.
“Barclay Berdan has honorably served North Texas healthcare for decades,” said Stephen Love, president/CEO of DFWHC. “We are so indebted to his leadership at Texas Health Resources and here at DFWHC, when he served as the Chair of our Board of Trustees. I cannot think of a more deserving recipient of this award, a North Texas Hall of Fame of healthcare administrators, if you will. We are looking forward to honoring him.”
Berdan will be only the 14th recipient of the award, and the first in almost two decades. Past recipients have included:

Recipients of the award must have served as a CEO for 15 years and made significant contributions to the healthcare industry. The vote is confidential and the one-time ballot of the Board must be unanimous.
The award’s namesake, Powell, Sr., built a world class medical center during his 45 years of service at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. During his historic tenure, he was responsible for more than 100 construction projects making up 11 city blocks of the medical campus. He was presented the inaugural award during DFWHC’s 1977 Annual Awards Luncheon.
During Berdan’s tenure, he led Texas Health through some of the most complex public health challenges in modern U.S. history while strengthening the organization’s clinical and operational capabilities. Under his leadership, Texas Health developed a nationally recognized, award-winning culture rooted in purpose and care for its people, while maintaining the financial strength needed to invest in innovation and support the communities it serves.
Today, Texas Health has 29 hospital locations, including acute care, short stay, behavioral health, rehabilitation and transitional care facilities, and more than 420 points of access including Texas Health Physicians Group and Texas Health Breeze Urgent Care clinics. Known for his steady, mission-driven leadership, Berdan leaves a lasting legacy in North Texas healthcare.
