With part of the Affordable Care Act going into effect, the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council’s President and CEO Steve Love offered his insight for CBS Evening News Monday evening, October 1.

Love was interviewed for Anna Werner‘s segment involving Medicare reimbursement penalties. As detailed, hospitals now face big fines if too many patients have to be readmitted because of complications. One of every five Medicare patients ends up back in the hospital within 30 days of being released, according to Werner’s report. The government is now penalizing hospitals for excessive readmissions in three areas: Patients recovering from heart failure, heart attacks or pneumonia. If a released patient comes back within 30 days, there’s a one-percent penalty.
